One letter from Edwin Eells to Caroline Hathaway of Spokane Public Library. Eells is responding to a letter with a newspaper clipping asking about his father, Cushing Eells. In the letter, he disputes some statements by a Mr. Edwards, and a story of "lost Indian." He disputes other facts from the article concerning his father's life.

Edwin Eells was a son of Rev. Cushing and Myra Eells who were among the earliest Protestant missionaries in the area. He was born at Tsimakain Mission, some thirty miles north of present-day Spokane. Reverend Cushing Eells, pioneer missionary and teacher, came west in 1838 with the American Fur Company and served in Spokane. After the Whitman Massacre (1847), he moved to Salem, Oregon where he taught in Oregon until 1860. He eventually returned to Walla Walla to promote the Whitman Seminary.
